LIB DEMS TOP STOCKPORT EURO POLL

Stockport Liberal Democrats are today celebrating topping the European Elections poll in the borough for the first time in their history.

Local Lib Dem MEP Chris Davies was re-elected to the European Parliament for a third term as the Lib Dems came first in the borough, squeezing out the Tories, and beating Labour into fourth place. The BNP finished in sixth place in the town.

Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell, where the Lib Dems were ahead in all six wards, claimed the victory was a good reward for the hard work of local campaigners:

"The Euro result in Stockport is a testament to the hard work of Chris Davies and his team, as well as the Lib Dem council group, who are providing excellent service for the people of Stockport.

"We've had a strong performance throughout the region, with our vote holding up well in areas where we were strong, whilst Labour has collapsed, and the Tories have stayed static.

"Whilst we've been able to win elections throughout the borough in the past, this is the first time that we have topped the poll for the Euro elections, so it's a great result for us, and reflects the faith that the people of Stockport have placed in our party."
