Local MP encourages schools to get their boots on

Schools in Hazel Grove can collect up to £400 in equipment from the Football Foundation as part of a national project launched this month worth over £800,000, local MP Andrew Stunell has announced.

Now Mr Stunell has written to every local school to encourage them to apply for the grants.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for our local schools to claim some much needed money for sports equipment. Football in particular has proven to be a good way to get young people interested in sport, healthy living and teamwork. This funding will make that more successful" said Mr Stunell.

There are over 2,000 grants available, and schools can claim one every three years. Schools can even claim two grants a year if they run both boys' and girls' teams.

"The rules for getting this grant are not too strict, and there are lots of them to go around. I am writing to all of the schools in my constituency to encourage them to take advantage of the funding on offer and upgrade the facilities and equipment available for local children".

The Football Foundation is the biggest sports charity in the UK, and has a £45 million annual budget provided by both the government and the Football Association. It has launched the Junior Kit Scheme to give local schools the opportunity to claim money for equipment and kits.

The Football Foundation is the biggest sports charity in the UK. With the Premier League, the Football Association and the Government each giving £15m a year, there is an annual budget of £45m available. This can go towards building new changing rooms or all-weather pitches, starting community schemes, or even providing a brand new football strip and equipment for junior teams. Since its launch in July 2000 the Football Foundation has supported more than 4,000 projects worth over £550m.

The Junior Kit Scheme entitles all under-18 football teams and adults with disabilities to receive a voucher of up to £400 to buy football kit and/or equipment. 2,000 awards are available every year. Any school or club can apply for two awards if they run both boys' and girls' teams.
