MP calls for greater awareness about silent killer10.04.50am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 15th Oct 2007
Faulty heaters and fires are putting many local families at risk, claims local MP, Andrew Stunell. He is highlighting the dangers of Carbon Monoxide fumes as 'the silent killer' as part of Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week. Carbon Monoxide is the most common poison in the UK today. It can cause death and long term health problems, usually as a result of poorly maintained boilers or other domestic appliances. The Hazel Grove MP said: "Carbon Monoxide poisoning is a major health problem largely because people often do not they are at risk. I am backing this campaign to raise public awareness of the dangers and ensure that people recognise the symptoms when someone has been poisoned. "I urge everyone to protect themselves and their families, by making sure that their domestic heating appliances are regularly maintained, and that Carbon Monoxide alarms have been fitted in their homes." ENDS Notes to editors: 1. The campaign is being launched by CO-Awareness in the House of Lords on Monday 15th October 2007. 2. CO-Awareness is a not-for-profit organisation based in Cheshire that is working to raise awareness of the dangers of CO. They will be calling on the Government, regulators and industry to tighten procedures for inspection and maintenance of equipment, as well as improving training of installers. 3. More information is available at the campaign's website www.co-awareness.co.uk.
