Stunell challenges energy company about increasing fuel poverty in Stockport

This week local MP, Andrew Stunell, held a crisis meeting with British Gas Centrica's top advisors following the company's dramatic 14% fuel price rise. There are fears that the rises will trap thousands of households in fuel poverty this winter.
Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell said:
"Over 5,000 people already face fuel poverty in Stockport. The recent gas price hikes will make this scandalous situation even worse, plunging more people into fuel poverty.
"There are more avoidable winter deaths in Britain than in any other country in Western Europe. Fuel poverty is an outrageous embarrassment for the government."
The Government pledged to eradicate fuel poverty in Britain by 2005, but they have recently admitted that it is getting worse.
Mr Stunell is advising residents with fuel bill problems to get in touch with Stockport Council for advice and information about grants to help improve energy efficiency and save money this winter.
Mr Stunell added:
"I will be taking up the issue of fuel poverty and energy prices with the Energy Minister as soon as Parliament restarts."
