Stunell launches campaign to claw back missing million from local mental health services4.58.23pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 11th Aug 2005
Andrew Stunell has launched a campaign for fair funding of local mental health services following new Pennine Care NHS Trust figures that reveal they face a £1 million shortfall in budget for the coming year, and will have to remain understaffed. According to a letter sent from the Chief Executive of the Pennine Care NHS Trust to local MP, Andrew Stunell, the budget for 2005/6 will be forced to be reduced to £17,334,598 from the projected budget of £18,334,598. Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell MP said: "Children's and other mental health services are letting the people of Stockport down, with long delays in assessment, and a desperate shortage of the right support and treatment available. "Greater Manchester Strategic Health Authority has amongst the lowest funded mental health services in the country. "Now the number of nurses, consultants, occupational therapists, psychologists, nurse therapists and administrative and managerial staff will be cut further. It is a disgrace." Mr Stunell added: "Some waiting lists are so long they have had to be closed. People of Stockport who are entitled to help are being left with no where to turn. "We need to see a cash injection into the mental health services in Stockport which have been under-funded for years." ENDS Notes to Editors 1. Currently the Pennine trust has frozen the equivalent of 21 posts including nurses, consultants, occupational therapists, psychologists, nurse therapists and administrative and managerial staff.
