Computer cock-ups hit Stockport's poorest, says Stunell
12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 7th Oct 2003
Hundreds of Tax Credit claimants in Stockport are left high 'n' dry by Inland Revenue computer cock-ups, according to Hazel Grove MP Andrew Stunell. Claimants are being caught in a loop between massively delayed payments and overpayments that they are then forced to pay back!
Local MP Andrew Stunell, has taken this matter up with the Inland Revenue and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, demanding action be taken to resolve the crisis, now.
Andrew Stunell said:
"This situation is diabolical. The bureaucratic chaos of the computer system in Preston is penalising the poorest in Stockport. They've honoured their end of the bargain by handing in a sack full of documents. To compound it all they are forced to payback money through cuts in their benefits!
"I've been approached by single mothers who are desperate to know what's going on. There should be a public information campaign warning people of the large scale blunders."
